Some members in attendance had concerns, but most stated that due to the colder weather, the weeds were not as bad this year. Members were advised to contact PLM directly with any problems. 616-891-1294 or jasonb@plmcorp.net

Introduced and welcomed Russ Yarger, Barry County Drain Commissioner

Dam Operation this season. Boards (4) have been raised on two separate occasions this year due to heavy rain and resultant high water.

Mike Cary explained the legal responsibility of the Drain Commissioners to regulate the dam based on the Jordan Lake Dam Operation Plan. Basically, if the gauge at the dam indicates a level of more than .3 inches, boards (4) are raised and not lowered until the lake returns to the mandated summer level. Some members inquired about the flood in Dec. ‘08 which was due to ice on the lake with no more room for the rain water. This was not a dam control issue as all boards were at their raised winter level. In the most recent high water the level rose to .5 inches. Observations of high water at the gauge at the dam should be reported to Russ Yarger @ 269-838-7761.

Brown Road & Down stream:

Russ Yarger reported that they cleaned out the culverts and the east side of the stream between Brown Road and the dam. This was also done to the culverts at Wellman Road. A firm has been hired to clean the south side of the culverts at Brown Road and a portion of the stream bed.

Mr. Yarger and members discussed the need for a box type bridge to replace the Brown Road culverts. Mr Yarger explained that the County has applied once again for critical bridge funds for Brown Road and it is supposedly at the “top of the list”.Discussed the need for members to contact their state legislators to lobby for this project.

State Rep. Brian Calley @ 517-373-0842 or briancalley@house.mi.gov

State Senator Patricia Birkholtz @ 515-373-3447 or SenPBirkholtz@senate.michigan.gov

FEMA flood insurance:

Woodland Township initiated this project as much of the Barry Co. portion of Jordan Lake has been declared a flood zone. Surprise !!

With that many residents are being forced by their mortgage companies to purchase at no small cost, flood insurance. FEMA has NOT so designated the area as a flood zone and thus properties cannot be given federal flood insurance. Such insurance is 8-10 times cheaper than that available privately. Of course, the matter is tied up in red tape and other various delays. Members are encouraged to contact their township supervisors:

Woodland Twp.: Dave Bursley 269-367-4915

Odessa Twp.: Robert Cobb 616-474-4237

Projects for the Jordan Lake Assoc.:

Develop a directory of all on the lake. Such a listing is available from each township. Several members offered to help put such a booklet together.

Discussion:

Some members talked about boating safety. This is something we all need to practice and report any violators.

Very few problems were reported with regard to the fishing tournaments.

Meeting adjourned
