JORDAN LAKE IMPROVEMENT BOARD

MINUTES FROM MARCH 17, 2005 MEETING

 

The meeting was called to order by Chairman Bill Walker at 7:00 p.m. at Odessa Township Hall.

 

Members Present:  Robert Cobb, Tom Doyle, Steve Schuiling, Dr. Michael Callton,

                                 Jane McClelland, Jim Banks and Bill Walker

 

Members Absent:   John Bush (excused)

 

Motion by Schuiling, second by Callton to approve minutes from February 24, 2005 meeting. Motion passed unanimously.

 

Doyle acted as Chairman to reorganize the Board and elect a Chairman. 

 

Election of Officers:  Motion by Schuiling, second by Cobb to nominate Bill Walker as Chairman. Motion by Cobb, second by Schuiling to close the nominations. Both motions passed unanimously.

 

Chairman Walker opened nominations for secretary. Motion by McClelland, second by Walker to nominate John Bush for secretary. Motion by Cobb, second by Callton to nominate Tom Doyle as secretary. Tom Doyle elected Secretary by unanimous vote.

 

Chairman Walker opened nominations for treasurer. Motion by Banks, second by Schuiling to nominate John Bush as Treasurer and to close nominations. Motion passed unanimously.

 

Jason Broekstra, Professional Lake Management, presented a timeline for 2005 weed control tasks and recommendations for new five year (2006 thru 2010) project for week control and water quality sampling. In addition, he discussed a nutrient sampling project designed to assess nutrient loads entering the Tupper Lake/Jordan Lake system, and nutrient contributions from sediment on the lake bottoms. Grand Valley State University scientist Dr. Steinman has been asked to provide a cost estimate for this project.

 

Board confirmed approval of a project to expend up to $1,000 by Professional Lake Management to do water sampling at outlet of Ionia County drains, in Tupper Lake and at the inlet to Jordan Lake.

 

Tony Groves, Progressive AE, discussed effort required to organize for the next five year plan. At our May meeting he will present tentative budgets from Professional Lake Management for years 2006-2010, timeline for process and public hearings for next project, and information from Dr. Steinman on phased approach to investigate and address nutrient loading.

 

Motion by Callton, second by Schuiling to continue to participate in the Cooperative Lake Monitoring Program for 2005 by expending $65.00 for water quality sampling (Secchi dish, spring phosphorus and summer phosphorus). Motion passed unanimously.

 

The Board determined the next meeting would be on May 5, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. at Odessa Township Hall.

 

Motion to adjourn by Schuiling with second by Banks. Motion passed unanimously.

 

Meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
