MICHIGAN LAKE AND STREAM ASSOCIATION

The Michigan Lake and Stream Association (MLASA) and the Michigan Waterfront Alliance (MWA) have developed a legislative agenda as follows.  The Jordon Lake Association participation in MLASA helps support these efforts.

  • Support legislation that would reinforce current Michigan case law including but not limited to prohibition of the use of road ends for lounging, sunbathing, docking or marinas.

  • Support legislation changes to control boat noise on inland lakes.

  • Support legislation amending MNEPA (Part 301,) formerly Michigan Lake and Streams Act, to require the DEQ to:

o         Regulate the number of boats and length of docks when issuing a marina-operating permit.

o         Define a marina.

o         Require DEQ to develop and utilize a carrying capacity formula when issuing marina-operating permits.

  • Support tighter control on the sale, distribution and transport of nuisance exotic species as they relate to Michigan lakes and watersheds.

  • Be it resolved that MWA encourages the state legislature to adopt legislation that would:

o         Inventory the waters of Michigan where Eurasian milfoil exists.

o         Acquire and categorize available information of all attempts to control or eradicate the plant and determine the success of control efforts.

o         Identify actions to be taken by the state.

o         Designate funding to pay for the control costs.

o         Enact penalties for transport of nuisance exotic species.

  • Oppose the selling and/or diverting of the waters of the Great Lakes watershed.

  • Support the introduction of legislation that would establish a Citizens Oversight Committee for the DEQ.

  • Support of a Partnership for Management of Michigan’s Inland Lakes.

  • Support current or future legislation that expands the current Michigan bottle deposit law to include non-carbonated and all alcoholic content related beverages.

  • Support legislation that would set a minimum age of 16 to operate all watercraft over 8 horsepower.

REFLECTION

As another summer season passes, we reflect on our beautiful Jordan Lake and the grand times had by all. The fishing has been good. The weekends have been sunny and warm for the most part. The weeds are under control.  The boating pleasurable and safe.

I do believe that all Jordan Lake property owners wish to keep our lake the quiet haven of relaxation that is has been. To accomplish this, we all need to work together. We, as Jordan Lake residents, need to be knowledgeable of the boating laws of Michigan. In addition, we need to encourage our visitors to abide by the rules of the water. This includes not only boaters, but also the numerous fishermen who visit our lake. None of us need to have our shorelines and seawalls awash or fishing tackle snagged on our boats and docks.

The Lake Association can provide very little enforcement of Michigan Lake rules, but we as an Association members can use our resources and contacts to educate others to proper boating and fishing etiquette, and concurrently set a good example for others to follow.

BOAT PARADE

The boat parade sponsored by the association and held in conjunction with the Summer Splash Festival in the Village of Lake Odessa was a success in spite of the weather. All boats were decorated very imaginatively based on the theme of “American Pride.” The Parade Committee consisting of Bill Walker, Mike Reed, Dave Creuger and Steve Schuiling did a fine job organizing and conducting the parade, which consisted of 15 boats.

The parade winners for decoration were 1st place, the Gunnar Johnson boat; 2nd place, the Don Acker boat; 3rd place, the Doug Flessner boat.

The Village is planning another Summer Splash  Festival for next summer and is looking forward to the boat parade  to be one of the key events. The  Festival will be earlier in the summer in 2003, with the last week in July or the first week in August being considered. This should allow the boat parade to finish before sunset.

So, let’s try to at least double the number of boats in the Summer 2003 Parade!
